Camden Car Accident Lawyers Discuss Accidents Involving Teen Drivers

The prevalence of car accidents involving teen drivers comes as no surprise to many, with the increase of cell phones, texting, and related technologies. CBS News reported on a recent study which found that more adult drivers admit to using the phone while driving. Furthermore, the rates of speeding among both groups were nearly the same. Yet, crashes involving teen drivers result in more serious injuries, with the rates climbing each year.

Why are Teen Drivers Involved in More Deadly Car Accidents than Adults?

Most already know that teen drivers generally lack the experience behind-the-wheel, yet this factor alone does not explain the rise in deadly car accidents by teenage drivers.

The study found that no single factor accounted for the rise. Rather, when inexperience was combined with increased speed and distractions, the rates soared. In addition, it was found that fewer teens used seat belts.

AAA reported that more parents today were failing to teach good driving habits than in the past decade. In fact, three distinct poor habits were identified. These, in order of most common are:

  • Poor visual scanning
  • Speeding
  • Allowing for distractions

In other words, one problem has to do with failing to look ahead to foresee potential danger. This was followed by excessive speed, which if combined with the first, is very hazardous. Combine it then with the worst habit, distracted driving, and the results are deadly.

Distractions can include such things as texting, eating, and talking excitedly to friends in the car, often the backseat. Finally, one additional change from the previous decade was discovered. Young drivers are waiting longer to obtain their license, often until the age of 18. This allows them to avoid participation in graduated license laws which many believe helped reduce fatal car crashes in the past. Thus, today’s teen drivers today are even less experienced than those of the previous decade.
