Respected New Jersey Superior Court Judge Edward Gannon has passed away at the age of 63 after he was critically injured in a fall. Judge Gannon was appointed to the Morris-Sussex Vicinage in 1991. The assignment judge for the Morris-Sussex Vicinage, Judge Stuart Minkowitz, has expressed deep respect and gratitude for Gannon’s impressive record. Minkowitz has praised Gannon’s work ethic and acknowledged that the late judge’s sense of service was legendary.
Judge Gannon served on the bench for over 25 years, in the criminal, civil and family divisions in Morris County, Sussex County and Passaic County. According to Judge Minkowitz, Gannon never hesitated to help his colleagues and was widely known as a caring and involved mentor. The assignment judge noted that Judge Gannon will be deeply missed by his colleagues.
Judge Gannon was critically injured when he fell backwards off of a step outside a deli in Boonton, New Jersey. He struck his head in the slip and fall accident. According to Gannon’s younger brother, Edward Gannon, it was not clear whether there was some medical factor that contributed to or caused his brother’s fall. Judge Gannon’s brother has stated that his family is appreciative of all the support his family has received and that his brother died surrounded by his loving family.
Members of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders have expressed condolences over Judge Gannon’s passing, noting that he was known for taking a strong interest in juvenile matters, and worked very hard to help troubled youths avoid getting caught in a vicious cycle of crime. According to the late Judge’s brother, his legacy will be being known as a champion of the underdog.
