Volvo Implements Speed Limits on All Vehicles
May 17, 2019
The Swedish vehicle manufacturer, Volvo Cars, plans to adjust their vehicles by implementing a speed limit. The company plans to begin the process in 2020 and officials are hoping that the adjustment will promote safer driving habits. The maximum speed for Volvo vehicles will reportedly end at around 112 miles per hour. The company is also making plans to lower vehicle speed limits in vulnerable areas, such as schools and hospitals. Although there is some controversy about Volvo’s decision, it ultimately sheds light on the importance of following speed limits.
This decision follows the company’s safety campaign, Vision 2020, which aims for zero driving fatalities in a Volvo vehicle by 2020. Part of fulfilling this goal is targeting dangerous driver behaviors, including drunk driving, distracted driving, and speeding.
When behind the wheel, motor vehicle drivers have the important role of ensuring their safety and the safety of those around them. Some behaviors that promote safe driving include keeping a safe distance between cars, obeying traffic signs and signals, and following the speed limit. However, many drivers often justify speeding when they are late to work, passing a vehicle, or following other speeding motorists. Those who make the decision to speed are putting themselves and others at risk for severe injury or fatality.
Speeding Safety Hazards
When drivers speed, they are putting countless lives in danger. Regardless of the circumstances, there is no appropriate time to break the speed limit. Speeding leads to various consequences, including losing control of the vehicle, needing more time to brake, and an increased risk of fatality in vehicle collisions. Speeding is also attributed to lowering the success rate of vehicle safety features.
Unfortunately, people tend to normalize day-to-day speeding. In a study, 42 percent of participants felt that driving 10 miles over the speed limit was not considered speeding. However, studies show that speeding even 10 miles per hour over the speed limit can increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents by more than nine percent. Speeding contributes to thousands of lost lives every year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 26 percent of fatal crashes involved at least one speeding driver in 2017. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that speeding is the most common driver-related factor in highway vehicle collisions resulting in fatality.
