Thanksgiving Travel Safety

November 26, 2019

Thanksgiving in the United States is a time for connecting with family, but since it usually creates a four-day weekend for most people, it is also a time for air and road travel. Over 40 million drivers will hit the roads in the United States over the Thanksgiving holiday. Planning for your road trip or long-distance drive to pick up a loved one from the airport can help avoid accidents and delays. Tips to consider in the days leading up to a long Thanksgiving drive include the following:

  • Give your vehicle a check-up: Take your car to a mechanic ahead of time to ensure that all your fluids are topped off and that the tires are in good condition. In some parts of the U.S., drivers may even encounter wintery conditions during the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Check your emergency kit: It is always a good idea to travel with an emergency kit in the car that includes a fire extinguisher, jumper cables, a tire-repair kit, flares, and non-perishable food items. Additionally, pack blankets, flashlights, and batteries in the event of a breakdown.
  • Leave early: Give yourself extra time to arrive to avoid speeding to your destination. This will help you reduce distractions on the road, such as texting to say you are running late or fiddling with the GPS to find the fastest route. A relaxed driver is less likely to have an accident.
  • Stay out of a truck’s blind spots: Keep in mind that truck drivers have blind spots and they may not see you changing lanes. If you cannot see a truck driver’s mirrors, they cannot see you.
  • Keep pets secure: If you are traveling with pets, make sure they are secure in crates or with harnesses. If they are secure, they are less likely to cause a distraction to you. Additionally, do not forget to bring extra supplies for your pet since the trip could take longer than anticipated.
  • Do not overload your car: Newer cars state the max load capacity on the inside of the driver’s door. The limit will include passengers and cargo, so be sure not to exceed the weight limit for your car. Additionally, make sure that sudden stops will not send your cargo flying or block your vision.
  • Be aware of the weather before you leave: Check to see if the weather will change during your route. Make sure your car is ready for any changes in weather and be sure to pack appropriate clothing in case your car breaks down in colder weather.
