St. Patrick’s Day Safety Against Drunk Drivers

March 17, 2020

St. Patrick’s Day, as with any celebration, is usually accompanied with alcohol. Unfortunately, the alcohol consumption during St. Patrick’s Day can get excessive; in fact, over 50 percent of Americans plan to drink on the holiday, with almost 80 percent of car accidents involving twice the legal limit of blood-alcohol levels. Even with statistics and research, there are still careless partygoers out there, as well as dangerous drivers.

Law enforcement around the country is boosting advertisements and notices on social media, reminding everyone to be safe during their celebrations and be mindful of the dangers of drunk driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving” campaign drives the point home that any alcohol consumption can cause one to lose their ability to focus, let alone operate a vehicle. The following statistics also remind people of the dangers of drunk driving:

  • Over 700 fatalities occurred from alcohol-related car crashes between 2007 and 2010.
  • Between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m. following St. Patrick’s Day, almost 70 percent of car fatalities were caused by drunk driving.
  • Over 56 percent of Americans plan to celebrate the holiday while consuming some form of alcohol.
  • Patrick’s Day is the fourth most popular drinking day of the year behind New Years, Christmas, and the Fourth of July.
  • Almost 30 percent of St. Patrick’s Day partygoers plan to celebrate in a bar or restaurant.

Law enforcement encourages celebrating the popular holiday, but only while safe and sober. If you do drink on St. Patrick’s Day, do not get behind the wheel, and do not let anyone you know get in the car with someone who was drinking.  Always find a designated driver for yourself, and if you host a party, make sure there are a sufficient amount of designated drivers. There are plenty of ridesharing apps to help as well; utilize them. If someone gets into an accident because of the alcohol you served them, you could be held liable.
