Reaching for Objects While Driving Proves Fatal

April 16, 2019

Teen drivers aged 15 to 20 are at a higher risk of death and disability from car accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatality in this age group. Teenage drivers reaching for objects in the vehicle are seven times more likely to be in an accident, making this a concern for all drivers and passengers on the roads.

The study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that reaching for objects, such as food, drink, or makeup, result in significantly more accidents for teenage drivers. In the study, NIH researchers installed cameras and GPS devices in vehicles of 82 teenage drivers in Virginia and monitored the results for a year. They discovered that when the driver’s eyes were not focused on the road, their accident risk increased by 28 percent. Teen drivers using a cell phone doubled their risk of a crash.

Distracted Driving

Of the 82 drivers monitored, 43 drivers did not have an accident, 25 drivers had one accident, and 14 drivers had two or more crashes. The researchers concluded that teens’ frequent usage of smartphones and technology caused them to multitask while driving. Distracted driving is a risk for drivers of all ages. In 2017, over 40,000 people were killed on U.S. roads due to motor vehicle accidents, which included talking or texting, operating navigation systems, eating, drinking, and talking with fellow passengers.

Despite bans in most states on texting while driving, teenage drivers are still using technology while operating a vehicle. Risks of motor vehicle accidents can include minor to major injuries to the driver, passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. If you were injured by a distracted driver on the road, consult a skilled car accident lawyer to ensure your rights are protected.
