Philadelphia Construction Accident Lawyers: Prevention of Construction Accidents

October 27, 2015

Over 800 workers are fatally injured at construction sites annually, making construction the deadliest industry in the United States. As such, there is a lot of research and focus on how to make construction sites safer. One of the biggest roadblocks to making construction sites safer; however, is seeing the research translate into practice on job sites.

How the Research to Practice Model Helps Make Construction Sites Safer

Earlier this year, the American Journal of Medicine partnered with the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) to try to influence safer practices on construction sites based on information gathered through extensive research. This type of partnership, called a “research to training” (R2P) partnership is an effort driven by parties with common goals for safety, utilizing available research to promote safety solutions and provide further research as well.

When stakeholders such as researchers, contractors, construction workers, developers, public regulatory agencies and medical professionals come together with a common goal, the transition from current to safer practices tends to happen more quickly and efficiently. The CPWR’s R2P model has been so successful, it is now used across multiple industries as a guideline for partnerships to advance new safety measures from research to practice in the field.

The American Journal of Industrial Medicine’s R2P with CPWR focused on the following key areas:

  • Preventing falls in residential construction by using a national marketing campaign
  • A specific case study of asphalt paving safety showing how research can effectively transition into practice
  • How the use of a systematic triage process is essential in utilizing the R2P process to create safer and healthier construction sites
  • Recommendations as to how each stakeholder industry can effectively develop, test, make, market and utilize new safety technology
  • How to increase the use of ergonomic safety equipment in a field which is uniquely resistant to using such solutions
  • Preventing construction site falls, particularly among Latinos, who are statistically more at risk for such accidents
  • The overwhelming amount of nail gun injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments
  • How managers’ perceptions of personal protection equipment (PPE) can limit its use and efficacy

All the safety knowledge in the world won’t prevent construction accidents if it is not being used on the job, and too often quality research does not reach those who can affect change in the actual workplace. While the R2P model hopes to change that, the construction industry remains one of the most dangerous industries for American workers.
