Philadelphia Construction Accident Lawyers: Protecting Outside Workers in the Summer Heat

July 27, 2015

Summer is the time for people to take advantage of the outdoor weather and enjoy fun in the sun.  Those who work outside in hot weather can be subject to heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses or injuries.  It is important that employers understand the types of heat stress their workers are exposed to and take precautions to protect  them from getting sick or injured in the heat while on the job.

Heat stress can range from getting a mild heat rash that is easily treatable, to full blown heat stroke which requires immediate medical attention. It is an employer’s responsibility to ensure that workers who must perform their job duties outside in hot weather are provided with the best possible conditions to safely endure soaring temperatures.

It is a good idea for bosses to schedule the most demanding physical parts of the jobs to be done during the coolest parts of the day.  This means that there may be some tasks that have to be put on hold during periods of excessive heat.   Employers should understand that their employees may need to slowly acclimate themselves to working in a very hot and humid environment, and may require extra breaks to cool down before resuming physical tasks.

Employees who work outside in the summer must be trained on the dangers and warning signs of heat stress.  Monitoring employees and looking for signs of unusual fatigue,  confusion, or disorientation should be part of a manager’s daily routine.   People need to be allowed to dress accordingly by wearing light, loose-fitting clothes in hot and humid weather.

Those working in extreme heat, especially construction workers, must drink plenty of water throughout the day and work at a pace that is the most comfotable for them.  Pushing oneself to get a job done in a timely manner can turn out to be a disasterious decision if the effects of moving too fast in the hot weather cause heat stroke or any other related illness or injury.
