Cherry Hill Truck Accident Lawyers: Crash Avoidance Systems

Most people are familiar with crash avoidance systems, and would welcome this technology in their vehicles as a safety upgrade. Crash avoidance technology uses radar, and sometimes cameras and lasers, to provide a warning to the driver when a collision is imminent. When coupled with the ability to act by automatically braking or steering, this feature renders a car semi-autonomous. There has been much in the news lately about how semi-autonomous and tech-assisted cars are safer.

A new study released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) strongly suggests that crash avoidance can help improve the safety of semi-trucks. The NHTSA study looked at a fleet of semi-trucks that had been fitted with crash avoidance technology, following them for a one-year period. During that year, not a single semi was involved in a rear-end crash. Currently, only 267 fleets are fitted with this technology (120,000 crash avoidance systems total). Industry experts are hopeful that the technology will be mandatory in all commercial vehicles

Semi-trucks are known to have several large blind spots (one of which is referred to as “no man’s land” and can extend up to twenty feet). When cars drive in no man’s land, a truck driver often does not realize that they are there. Crash avoidance technology could eliminate the risks associated with this hazard altogether.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there are around 400,000 truck accidents every year in America, and almost 70,000 of these are serious rear-end crashes. Rear-end crashes involving a car and a semi are known to be deadly, since a semi can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. When a semi-truck rear-ends a smaller car, it frequently crushes the car completely under its weight, fatally injuring any passengers inside. Now, it seems these types of trucking accidents may be preventable.
