Cherry Hill Car Accident Lawyers: New Technology Making Cars Safer

Cherry Hill Car Accident Lawyers: New Technology Making Cars Safer

Cars are becoming more technologically advanced every year, and so are their safety features. Auto manufacturers are installing new safety technology intended to prevent car accidents and save lives. Some of these safety features, called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), are designed to remind, alert, or warn drivers of potential danger. ADAS come standard in some base model cars, are offered as part of pricier upgrade packages, or are available as single installations.

Backup cameras

Backup cameras will be a standard feature in every car in the next few years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is requiring all new cars to have backup cameras by 2018. Drivers can see the area behind their car on a screen installed in their dashboard or rearview mirror, offering them greater visibility when driving in reverse. Some cameras issue warning alerts when drivers are approaching hazards while backing up.

Automatic breaking systems

Twenty car makers have committed to installing automatic breaking technology in all new cars by 2022 in effort to reduce rear-end car accidents. Automatic braking or collision avoidance technology use cameras, sensors, and computer software to detect an impending impact with another vehicle, a pedestrian, or other hazard. If the driver fails to react after a visual or auditory warning, the automatic breaking system kicks in.

Lane departure systems

Lane departure warning technology is another ADAS helping drivers avert serious car accidents caused by distracted driving. Whether a driver is texting, adjusting the radio, applying make-up, or simply turning around to talk to passengers in the back-seat, anything that diverts a driver’s attention from the task of driving is dangerous. Safety experts warn that while travelling 55 miles per hour, taking your eyes off the road for just five seconds is like driving the length of a football field blindfolded. Lane departure systems sound an alarm when drivers veer out of their lane. Advanced lane departure systems automatically steer the car back into place if the driver fails to react.

There are many reasons why cars are getting safer. Consumers want assurance that the car, van, or SUV they choose will hold up in a crash. Vehicle safety is also regulated by law. The government can require auto makers to install proven safety technology in every new car. The insurance industry also has a financial stake in reducing car accidents. Whatever the motivation, any technology that keeps Americans safe on the road should be the way of the future.
