Cherry Hill Product Liability Lawyers Discuss Safety Tips for Portable Heaters

December 07, 2015

As the temperatures begin to plummet, the use of portable space heaters is on the rise. While these heaters may be a convenient source of warmth, they can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), heating equipment is the second leading cause of house fires in the United States, resulting in over 65,000 fires each year, particularly in the months of December, January and February.

When operating portable space heaters, always make safety a top priority. Keep your home safe and warm this winter by following some of these simple tips.

  • When purchasing a portable space heater, confirm with the salesperson that the heater has been safety-certified. If it has, it will have a safety certification mark.
  • Before using a space heater, read all manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels.
  • Carefully check heater for any cracked or broken plugs or any loose connections before each use. Do not use heater if cord is frayed or damaged.
  • Keep any flammable objects at least three feet away from the heater.
  • Maintain a three-foot no-kid zone around space heaters at all times.
  • Always turn space heaters off when not in the room or if you are going to sleep.
  • Make sure you are using the correct type of fuel for your heater model.
  • Portable space heaters should never be used to cook, to dry clothes or to warm bedding.
  • Keep portable heaters out of high traffic areas so that there is no danger of tripping over the unit.
  • Do not use extension cords when plugging in space heaters. Plug directly into outlet and do not plug other devices into the same outlet. Never run a heater’s cord underneath carpeting.
  • Make sure the surface that the heater is placed on is level and stable.
  • Never touch an electric heater if you are wet. Keep electric heaters away from water to prevent electrocutions.
  • When not in use, store heater in a safe place, away from children.
