Roughly three million food service employees and about one million restaurant guests are injured in slip and fall accidents each year. Most of these accidents are due to slippery or wet floors. Restaurant owners and managers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of employees and guests on their premises; however, slip and fall accidents are the leading cause of restaurant injuries in the U.S.
Restaurant owners who fail to take safety precautions may be liable for any accidents or injuries that occur on their property under premises liability laws. If possible, when you fall in a restaurant, whether you are an employee or a guest, take the following steps to properly document your accident:
- Complete an incident report form noting the date, time and location of the accident.
- Get contact information for any witnesses to the accident.
- Make note of the conditions and circumstances pertaining to your accident.
- If possible, take photos of the scene.
